Maybe Burn is saying that being a good person may be the simplest and best path towards a peaceful happy life, but it doesn't make the ride any less horrific, dangerous, or difficult.

Is this particular movie just completely cynical and nihilistic? At least Fargo had that beautiful little ending. The universe doesn't care how good you are. And in Burn After Reading, Richard Jenkins is hatchet murdered by John Malkovich. movie in which the main character has tried his whole life to be " A Serious Man" (which is basically just Jewish for "a good person".) At the exact moment that he commits his first immoral act in the entire movie, his office phone rings and his doctor basically informs him that he has cancer. This is reminiscent of another Coen bros. At least not until he commits a breaking and entering crime, but he only does so out of love for Frances McDormand's character. He's morally pure and he might never have committed an unethical act in his entire life. ("It's a long story.") My theory is that there was some sort of corruption within the church, but he wouldn't play ball with the higher ups so he either left or was dismissed. Richard Jenkins' character used to be an Orthodox priest, but he lost that position and doesn't explain why.

Every other character is a cheater, a liar, or a killer, etc. It seems that the only major character in the movie who is a decent person, or at least isn't shown to have any flaws in his morals, is Richard Jenkins' character, the manager of Hardbodies Gym.

It's primarily a comedy, but the Coens wrote it, so there is more to be drawn from it than just laughs.
